Social Advocacy Through Pungmul:
Preserving Culture and Building Community
Much of my advocacy work centers around performing traditional Korean drumming, or pungmul, which holds deep historical and cultural significance. Historically, pungmul was used in Korea to mobilize communities, resist oppression, and celebrate collective action, serving as a tool for social cohesion and political expression.
Although I am not Korean, I deeply relate to and empathize with the messages conveyed through pungmul. Its themes of community, resilience, and collective empowerment resonate with my own advocacy values. Through performing and teaching pungmul, I aim to honor its history while creating inclusive spaces for community engagement and cultural exchange. Each performance is more than music—it is a way to connect people, spark dialogue, and foster solidarity. By combining artistry with advocacy, I demonstrate how cultural traditions can be powerful tools for awareness, resilience, and collective action.
